The rest in the spotlight. Repair & experiment

Munich-based artists Klaus Erika Dietl and Stephanie Müller use textiles to develop objects, sculptures and installations. Their source material is often the discarded, worn and long-forgotten. The two see their objects and interventions as playable contact surfaces and opportunities for encounters. They also like to be active in public spaces. During performances and concerts, the stage becomes a sounding workshop. They sew and mend to the sound of live music.
What becomes possible when repairing meets artistic experimentation? In the workshop, the focus is not on precision craftsmanship. Dietl and Müller’s main aim is to whet the appetite for long-forgotten and almost discarded items.
In the workshop, we consciously slow down the tempo. In exchange with the clients of Lebenshilfe, we take time for our own favorite pieces. The torn trousers, the scratched lucky charm, the torn necklace: favorite pieces brought along are reworked and changed. Similar to “Visible Mending” or “Kintsugi”, we leave visible traces behind when repairing. The breakages are no reason to throw them away. Instead, they become the starting point for experimental design. Between the seams, twists and traces of glue, we address the question of sustainability in practice and a culture of repair and upcycling that is full of fun.

Klaus Erika Dietl and Stephanie Müller have particular experience with textile strategies. In the workshop, they will share their expertise and give an insight into the world of art and fashion projects that are critical of consumption. Previous sewing and other artistic or craft skills are welcome, but not required. The focus is on the joy of using resources sensitively and experimenting with discarded and broken materials.

On March 19, 2024, the workshop will start at 9:15 a.m. with an initial get-together over breakfast. Open cooperation and support are at the heart of the joint discussion.
On April 16, 2024, there will be a continuation of the workshop between 9:15 am and 11:45 am. This date is intended to enable a slow discussion as well as a creative deepening. Redesigns and changes that were initiated in the first session will be continued here.
The exhibition is dedicated to the question of living sustainability and a culture of repair and upcycling
