About Arts & Knowledges

What happens at the interface between art and science? What happens when scientists and artists meet? The unique Inter-University Organization Arts & Knowledges, a cooperation between the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg and the Mozarteum University Salzburg, explores these questions in a wide variety of formats and programs. In a deliberate combination of local and international perspectives, three thematic focus areas and a doctoral program contextualise contemporary social issues and bring them into interdisciplinary contexts.

From October 2024, Arts & Knowledges will start the new Focus Area period, which is entitled ‘Cultures in Transformation’. Building on the successful concept of practised methodological diversity, critical discourse and active engagement with current challenges, Arts & Knowledges will continue to develop and change: The aim of the three focus areas ‘Figurations of Transition’, ‘Society and Sustainability | Contemporary Art and Cultural Production’ and ‘InterMediation. Music – Impact – Analysis’ is to open up to new forms of cooperation and formats of knowledge production and communication. Once again, joint creation and development are at the centre of Arts & Knowledges.

The Focus Areas organize a diverse range of symposia, conferences and workshops, which are also open to an interested public.

In addition, they offer students of the Paris Lodron University and the Mozarteum University interesting Advanced Studies at the intersection of science and arts in the form of two Study Supplements and one Study Focus.

The range of courses includes the Basic Modules I and II: “The Arts: Theory and Discourses” and the supplementary modules ‘The Arts: Practice and Mediation’ and ‘Cultural Management & Cultural Production’, which together form the Study Focus ‘Arts, Culture and their Mediation’.

In October 2024, seven students began the doctoral program co-financed by the state of Salzburg, which focusses on ‘Cultures in Transition’.
