Reframing Narratives: The Female Gaze in Non-Conformist Cinema

This input explores the intersection of theory and practice by diving into the overlooked history of women filmmakers who challenged mainstream cinema. Using Robin Blaetz’s book Women’s Experimental Cinema: Critical Frameworks as a starting point, filmmakers Fernanda Pessoa and Chica Barbosa embarked on a collaborative journey of research and creation during the pandemic, reconnecting through video letters that reimagine cinematic language from a female perspective. Inspired by pioneering avant-garde women directors, their film project Swing and Sway highlights the urgency of questioning traditional film aesthetics and storytelling, while reflecting on life, politics, and the evolving role of women in cinema.
