Social sustainability, justice and diversity in the cultural sector
Social sustainability, along with ecological and economic sustainability, forms a cornerstone of cultural sustainability. It particularly refers to the dimensions of equitable living conditions, work environments, and opportunities for access to the cultural sector, as well as participation in cultural institutions and cultural policy. To make arts and culture more just and accessible, anti-discrimination and diversity orientation are essential.
Within this research topic we aim, on the one hand, to investigate the status quo in the cultural field, and particularly the barriers to social sustainability, fair working conditions, and greater diversity in cultural institutions. On the other hand, we focus on engaging with concrete, practice-oriented concepts and approaches in cultural practice and cultural policy that attempt to initiate transformation processes towards greater justice in the cultural sector.
Approach & Methods
Central is approaching the topic through transdisciplinary exchanges, collaborations, and research especially with
- cultural institutions (like Museum der Moderne Salzburg, SPACE, ARGEkultur Salzburg etc.),
- Non-Governmental Organizations (like D—Arts, Radiofabrik, Decolonizing Salzburg etc.),
- Cultural policy institutions (like Stadt and Land Salzburg), and
- university members (of MMG Migration Mobility Lab, IGG Institute for Gender and Equality or Working Group Diversity verlinken).
We focus on co-creative processes that critically question existing forms of knowledge and that develop new forms of knowledge on socially relevant topics. This happens for example within the Network D—Arts. Project Office for Diversity which we are part of. Regular internal network meetings serve to exchange ideas and develop concrete formats and spaces to support marginalized artists and critically examine institutions. Sharing knowledge and expertise is an important part of this cooperation.
Goals
Theoretical and practice-based critical reflection, the development of new knowledge and specific recommendations.
Expected Results
Network meetings, organizing events, developing and producing podcasts, publications etc.
