SYMPOSIUM DAY THREE – GUEST SESSION ELEVEN
Artist Presentation and Crafting Circle with Monica LoCascio
Monica C. LoCascio will open the session with an introduction to her artistic research practice, with a focus on her commitment to authentic materials, craft-based methodologies, and embodied knowledge practices.
Afterwards, Monica C. LoCascio will help guide the participants through the process of creating their own (or shared) simple loom, and weaving a textile with salvaged, recycled, and unusual materials. During the communal working session participants are invited to connect over stories of their materials, ask questions related to Monica C. LoCascio’s presentation or practice, suggest discussion topics related to the day’s session, or share anything else that might want attention.
Participant Information:
All necessary materials will be provided for the session, and participants are also invited to bring material that is ready to be thrown away, but might hold sentimental or metaphorical value. This can include but is not limited to clothing, books or magazines, photographs, jewelry, housewares, natural fibers or plants, furniture, technological devices, or anything else the participant feels like carrying.
Monica C. LoCascio is a transdisciplinary artist focusing on the materiality of invisible phenomena. Her works arrive as artifacts of her material and theoretical research on memory, microbiology, theoretical physics, and hierarchies of knowledge and power. She pairs fermented bio-materials, salvaged fiber, and heritage craft techniques with industrial and salvaged materials to examine the tension between the fluidity and vulnerability of the lived human experience and the systems and institutions that contrast it. She began her art-making practice at the age of 5 when she was taught to crochet and embroider by her grandfather’s twin sister.
