Craftivism in Fashion: Creative Practices as Tools for Social Change

SYMPOSIUM DAY ZERO – GUEST SESSION ONE

Guest Input & Artist Conversation with Seamline Atelier – Edward Muyizi and Eria Tamale

This Guest Input explores the power of fashion and design as tools for social change through the lens of craftivism – activism expressed through craft and creativity. Seamline Atelier, a socially conscious Ugandan fashion brand, shares how creative practices can respond to global and community challenges by using fashion to start meaningful conversations. The session features two of Seamline’s impact-driven projects: The Plucked Rose, which raises awareness about child sacrifice in Uganda through storytelling, design, and poetry (featuring poet Geof Dpoet); and Suubi Collection, inspired by Ssuubi Solomon, which highlights the challenges faced by educated yet unemployed youth and sparks dialogue about education and opportunity. Through these projects, Seamline Atelier demonstrates how art, fashion, and collaboration can empower communities, amplify unheard voices, and reimagine a more compassionate and sustainable world.
