Is queering the museum enough?

Reflections on queer-feminist strategies in institutions

What is the difference between a queer exhibition, a queer-feminist intervention and an intersectional opening process in a cultural institution? How can transformative processes succeed and lead to sustainable structural changes? Is the conversion of an established institution worthwhile or should the energy not rather be invested in the development of new organizations? What are the usual stumbling blocks and how can we learn from previous efforts? Where can we find allies? How does a museum become a living place?

Vera Hofmann works as an artist, curator, consultant and author. From 2016-2020, they was on the board of the Schwules Museum in Berlin and in 2018 they led and co-curated the year-round queer-feminist intervention “Jahr der Frau_en” and published the 2022 project as an archive and magazine at yearofthewomen.net. Hofmann is co-editor of “Radicalizing Care – Feminist and Queer Activism in Curating” (Sternberg Press) and co-author of “Commoning Art – Die transformativen Potenziale von Commons in der Kunst” (Transcript Verlag). Hofmann is currently working on Queer/ing Common/ing. verahofmann.de
