Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald: Residency at W&K
We are delighted to welcome Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald as a guest at Arts & Knowledges in April.
The two residencies (the first in autumn 2025 with Djamila Grandits), under the theme “Exploring diversity at the interfaces of arts and knowledges ”, aim to open up new perspectives on diversity and discrimination.
This unique call for applications was made possible by the award of the International Prize for Science and Research (Kulturfondspreis 2023) to Arts & Knowledges under the then-director Elisabeth Klaus. Artists, curators, cultural mediators and researchers were invited to submit proposals for transdisciplinary projects that reflect both the theme of “Cultures in Transformation” – Arts & Knowledge’s guiding principle for the period 2024–2028 – and questions of diversity.
With these residencies, Arts & Knowledges is sending a strong signal regarding social responsibility and transdisciplinary exchange.
Two submissions impressed the jury with their conceptual depth and an exciting interplay of artistic practice and scholarly reflection:
- Djamila Grandits, a curator, spent four weeks here in November 2025 working on the project trouble.rupture.glitch. speculative (curatorial) movements emerging from discomfort.
- Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald, an artist, activist and cultural worker, is expected to begin her residency in spring 2026. Her work focuses in particular on the theme of decolonisation.
Colleen Ndemeh Fitzgerald is a multidisciplinary performance artist, activist and cultural worker of Kpelle (Liberian) and Irish-American descent. She’s doing artistic and political work internationally on topics of feminism, anticolonialism, and Blackness. She received her BA in Dance and Anthropology from Bates College (US) and an MA in performance at the UdK
– HZT Berlin (Germany). She is a co-founder of Kukily Collective with whom she exhibited and performed at the 2024 Lagos Biennial.
